About Natural Heritage

The need to conserve India’s rich natural heritage was of major concern to INTACH which led to the setting up of Natural Heritage Division in 1984. It advocates sustainable use of natural resources, works on eco-restoration, conservation and creation of environmental assets. The solutions range from the simple to the sophisticated, with technical emphasis to elements of social engineering, from pioneer projects to policy formulations. The initial focus has been on water issues, a vast complex subject inextricably linked to issues of human survival, biodiversity and wildlife habitat. This has inevitably led the Division to engage in larger environmental issues not confined to water management alone. The Division aims at influencing state policy and environmental impact of large private entities through carrying out pioneer projects and addressing policy lacunae by hosting expert forums.
