The Standart to Propose More Bulgarian Sites for UNESCO Heritage List

The Standart daily will launch a national campaign for including more Bulgarian historical sites in UNESCO World Heritage List. The initiative will be a continuation of Bulgaria's Wonders campaign, organized by The Standart and which singled the ten most significant historical and cultural monuments in Bulgaria. "This year is important to the newspaper because it will celebrate its 20-th anniversary. In the middle of 2012 we will invite famous singers and dance ensembles to perform in Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture at the presentation of the most interesting historical events and Bulgaria's Wonders. If we have to use a slogan to characterize the twenty years life of The Standart daily it will be: "The newspaper of thinking people". I would like to thank to our devoted readers.
"The Standart proved to be the most serious and influential newspaper in Bulgaria," the Standart's Editor-in-Chief, Mrs Slavka Bozukova, stated for the Bulgarian National Radio.
The second nation-wide campaign will be launched in the spring. Later on, the Standart will organize a nation-wide poll to give the Bulgarians an opportunity to vote for those Bulgarians wonders which have to be enlisted in UNESCO list. The votes of the Bulgarians will be collected for the whole summer and will be generalized in the autumn. The Standart will invite UNESCO experts to Bulgaria to help their Bulgarian colleagues in the preparation of the documents of the nominations.
At the end of last year, UNESCO secretary general Irina Bokova appealed through the pages of the Standart that it was time that new Bulgarian sites be enlisted under the protection of the world organization. For the last time Bulgarian sited were enlisted in UNESCO lists at the beginning of 1980s.
