Soon, a ‘Dilli Haat’ in city

Yogesh Kumar, TNN | Apr 1, 2012, 03.01AM IST

GURGAON: The city will soon have a 'Dilli Haat' of its own. The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) is working on a project to jazz up the culture quotient of the city.

Though the project's design is still at a conceptual stage, HUDA maintains that the food plaza-cum-craft bazaar will be based on a theme similar to Dilli Haat. HUDA has roped in Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage (INTACH) for the project.

"INTACH has submitted a proposal for designing a 'haat' in Gurgaon. The department is serious about executing the project since it will add beauty to the city and bring all the cultural aspects of the region under a single roof," said Praveen Kumar, HUDA administrator.

INTACH officials had recently met the HUDA administrator regarding the project and the civic agency is on the lookout for the right location. The design for the project will also depend on the size of the land. The main idea behind the project is to set up a unique cultural hub in the city so that residents don't have to drive all the way to Delhi. Kumar said that the project would have three different types of sections: Food, ethnic product shops and open-air theatre for live performances. Much like Dilli Haat, the Gurgaon project too will have shops selling products from all over the country.

HUDA has several land options available for the project, but nothing has been finalized so far. Sources in the agency said that some officials were keen to earmark land in Sector 29 for this. But another group of officials were keen on setting up the project close to MG Road. "Proximity to MG Road will be a great advantage and it will also sync with the beautification plans that HUDA has for the entire stretch from Sikanderpur to IFFCO Chowk," said another official.
